According to Chennai Corporation data, 6,344 samples were taken from college students in the city till Wednesday. “Of the total samples tested, as many as 210 students were confirmed positive for the virus,” an official said. 

As of Thursday, the civic body was awaiting the results of 2,361 samples.

Among the 210 students, 200 were from colleges and educational institutions located in Adyar zone, in which IIT-Madras and Anna University are functioning. 

The civic body had collected samples from 2,498 students in Adyar zone alone and most of the students were from Anna University and IIT-Madras. 

More than 200 positive cases were reported on the IIT Madras  campuses.

The civic body began collecting samples from educational institutions soon after more than 70 COVID cases were reported at IIT-Madras on Sunday.

Five students were tested positive in Valasaravakkam zone, while three were positive in Sholinganallur. One student each from Alandur and Perungudi were also tested positive.

“Sanitary inspectors of all divisions have been directed to collect samples from students studying in colleges located in their respective divisions. 

We are collecting samples from private college students, too,” the official added.

There are around 150 higher educational institutions and colleges in the city.

“Most of the cases were reported from IIT-Madras. We are going to study the reason for the spurt of cases on the campus along with experts,” Corporation Commissioner G Prakash added.
