According to BJP sources, arrangements had been made at Bijnor’s Vardhaman College ground for the PM’s rally but he could not arrive due to bad weather.

However Modi later addressed the event virtually which also witnessed very few  public gathered ..

Reacting to the development, Chaudhary tweeted, “The sun is shining in Bijnor but the weather is bad for the BJP!”

He shared a TV grab of a news report on the prime minister’s physical rally getting cancelled due to “inclement weather” and also posted a screenshot of a Google weather report which showed a bright, sunny day in Bijnor.

“The BJP had earlier promised better electricity and development in Bijnor. If the Prime Minister had visited them today, the people would have asked questions. So suddenly BJP’s weather turned bad,” he said at a rally in Meerut Cantonment, reported national medias .

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his physical rally in Uttar Pradesh being cancelled due to inclement weather, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary said the “weather is bad” for the BJP.

Chaudhary’s jibe comes in the wake of his allegations the BJP has been trying to woo RLD leaders as well as the party chief into the saffron fold ahead of Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

His tease  also draws from reports about BJP politicians facing unwelcoming crowds during poll campaigns in several parts of western Uttar Pradesh following the farmers’ agitation.

Western Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor, bordering Uttarakhand, goes to polls on February 14 during the second of the seven-phase assembly polls. Is 70 assembly seats is decisive for government formation in Uttar pradesh

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) media incharge and farmer leader Dharmendra Malik says the entire election will be between “pro-BJP and anti BJP” people. It won’t be easy for the BJP to repeat its resounding victory of the 2014, 2017 and 2019 elections this time, he argues.

“Many pro-BJP voters seem to have turned against it in the region especially in the rural areas. The year-long farmers’ movement had played a significant role to bring about this shift of opinion,” claims Malik.

Political analyst Jamshed Zaidi, too, believes the situation is not as conductive for the ruling BJP as it was in the 2017 elections when the party won 51 out of 70 assembly seats in the region ( Meerut, Saharanpur and Moradabad divisions).

Zaidi says the farmers’ movement, price rise, unemployment and multiple problems of the common man may have a bearing on the prospects of the ruling party.

The farmers’ movement has given a new lease of life to the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in its political home turf of western UP and its alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP) would pose a tough challenge to the BJP.

The death of Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh due to Covid-19 related complications in May will also bring sympathy votes for his son Jayant Chaudhary who now heads the party.
