Former CAG Vinod Rai Tenders Unconditional Apology To Congress Leader Sanjay Nirupam In A Defamation Case

Former CAG Vinod Rai has tendered his unconditional apology to Congress Leader Sanjay Nirupam in a defamation case registered by him.

The matter arose after a case was filed by Nirupam in the Patiala House Court after he alleged that Rai was pressurised by Nirupam to keep the then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh’s name out of the CAG report on 2G spectrum.

The affidavit filed by Rai stating an unconditional apology reads this:

“I have realised that, in answer to questions posed to me by the interviewers, I had inadvertently and wrongly mentioned the name of Shri Sanjay Nirupam as one of the MPs, who pressurized me to keep the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s name out of the CAG report on 2-G Spectrum allocation during the meetings in the PAC or the sidelines of the JPC etc.”

The above  statements against Nirupam were made by Rai in the year 2014 in an interview given to Arnab Goswami with Times Now news channel on September 11, 2014.

The statement was also published in The Times of India’ and The Indian Express’ newspapers the next day including an interview given to Sagarika Ghose, which was published in The Times of India’ newspaper.

“That the statements made by me against Shri Sanjay Nirupam, as televised and published, as abovestated, are factually incorrect.

That I understand the pain and agony my statements have caused to Shri Sanjay Nirupam , his family and his well-wishers and thus, would like to offer my unconditional apology for the hurt caused by my such statements to Shri Sanjay Nirupam, his family, friends and his well-wishers,” the affidavit reads.
