The death toll in the terrorist attack on New Zealand’s mosques has risen to 49
This was after a group of terrorists opened fired at Muslim worshipers in two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.
Police in New Zealand have said that they had arrested four people including one woman in connection with the terrorist attack.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has described the gunman, who had Australian citizenship as ‘extremist, right-wing’ terrorist.
In her statement to the nation, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had termed the Friday’s terror attacks on mosques as one of New Zealand’s ‘darkest days.’
According to New Zealand police commissioner Mike Bush, the two mosques targeted by terrorists were the Al Noor mosque, located in central Christchurch and a mosque in the suburb of Linwood was evacuated, but there were fewer details from that site.
Bush said that police had also defused ‘a number of IEDs (explosive devices) attached to vehicles.’
The terrorist had also live streamed the carnage on Facebook. But the social media giant said that it had removed the video from its platform.
Members of the Bangladeshi cricket team were about to enter the mosque when the terrorist opened fire. Fearing for their lives, they ran for safety.
Later a journalist accompanying the team has posted the video of Bangladeshi players running for safety. The first Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand, scheduled to start on Saturday, has been cancelled.
Authorities in New Zealand have asked mosques across the country remain shut.
Eye witnesses said that they saw the terrorist shoot worshipers in their chests and head.
