More than 2,000 women from various parts of Karnataka are taking out a ‘padayatra’ and ‘jail bharo Andolan’ from Malleshwaram to Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday demanding a ban on the sale of liquor in the state.
The decision to hold a rally was taken during a huge public convention held at Siddaganga Matha on January 26.
“The reasons for the protest against the sale of liquor is domestic violence happening to the women in rural areas. Around 3000 women had participated in the movement which started from Chitradurga on January 19,” said Abhay, an activist.
“On 30th January 2019, the day Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by RSS men Godse , women will march towards Bengaluru and lay siege to Vidhana Soudha.
People’s movement, organisations, students groups and youths thinkers have joined hands with the organisers to strengthened their struggle.
Women want liquor to be banned in the state and they don’t mind going to jail for this. It is indeed very heartening to see women walking with their children in the hot sun and old people too are walking with them,” said Prasanna an activist.
“It is very shameful that none of the elected representatives has come to visit the padayatra till date,” he added.
“I request Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to ban liquor by October 2 Gandhi Jayanti, the movement will not stop till the women get justice,” said freedom fighter H. S. Doreswamy.
Theatre personality Arundhati Nag also joined the protest.
