According to the latest count in the hotly-contested JNUSU elections, the votes for the central panel saw the Left Unity candidates leading in all four seats.
With 90% of votes counted 4709 / 5185 confirmed Left unity ( leftwing Communist ideology ) candidates got comfortable leads for all the 4 posts namely President Vice President , General Seceratary and Joint Secretary .
Now the official results for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union (JNUSU) elections are likely to be released today evening after the counting of votes resumed on Saturday evening.
The counting of the votes was indefinitely suspended at 4:00 AM on Saturday after members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly attacked the School of International Studies building where the ballot boxes were stored, breaking the glasses of the building.
The ABVP now very much know even the balance 10% votes if goes to them they can’t win as the Left unity victory margin has taken a comfortable lead
Camping in front of the counting hall, students claiming affiliation with different parties, heavily criticised the frenzied destruction the campus was subjected to.
Since the university is dominated by the Left, the alleged errant Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad was tutted by the majority of them. Darting glances of disapproval at the protesting ABVP members, Radhika Thakur of Centre of Women Studies said, “This is sheer hooliganism. How can they be so brazen and violent? University is not the place to flex muscles.”
The RSS-affiliated ABVP and the Left parties indulged in a blame game Saturday as they accused each other of roughing up their members in the JNU with the Left even alleging that attempt was made to kidnap one of their woman members outside the university.
Meanwhile, the Left members accused the ABVP members of attacking them in the evening and making an attempt to kidnap them around 10.30 pm.
“While coming from the police station after registering complaint against the goons of ABVP who violently attacked us today, a car with four men from which two men with handkerchief tied on their face came with belt, started beating us from all corners,” alleged a woman member of the Left bloc. She claimed they were armed.
Meanwhile, the Left also claimed the ABVP members were stationed inside the campus armed with sticks, a charge denied by the ABVP.
Police said they are stationed at all the gates of the campus and the counting is underway inside.
