The Supreme Court ordered the Central Vigilance Commission to complete probe against CBI director Alok Verma under the supervision of former Supreme Court Judge AK Patnaik on Friday.

In a major set back to ruling BJP government  the top court also ordered  that interim CBI boss Nageshwar Rao will only carry out ‘routine duties’ and restrains him from taking any major policy decisions.

Also the caretaker director has been tasked to handle only routine administrative tasks necessary to keep the CBI functioning.

Alok verma whom opposition supported who petitioned  against the midnight coup by Center government  on the same day and got order for  SC monitored probe to be concluded in 2 weeks

This particular order means that Rao won’t be able take any decision with regard to pending CBI cases, change of Investigating Officers, or officer in any other probe.

Apex court even called for a report from the CBI in sealed cover about the decisions taken by Nageshwar Rao between October 23 till today.

On other hand, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the CVC. Attorney General was there for Centre.

Meanwhile, when Mukul Rohatgi sought to argue for Rakesh Asthana, court asked him whether any petition was moved by him. He said the petition was in the process of being filed. Court said, “why were you late?”  and then Judges said “We are not bothered about Rakesh Asthana”

The court will take up the matter next on November 12 by when the Centre will place a copy of the inquiry report against Verma in sealed cover.

Appearing for Verma, Fali Nariman said that ‘CBI Director was appointed with approval of selection panel having PM, Leader of Opposition and CJI.’ He also referred to the CVC and Centre’s orders divesting Verma of his duties. He also cited Vineet Narain judgment to support Verma’s plea.
