Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday said labelling remarks by George Soros as an ‘attempt to topple the democratically elected government in India’ was a puerile statement.
He wondered if the Modi government was “so feeble” that it can be toppled by a stray statement of a 92-year-old rich foreign national.
Chidambaram’s statement came after the BJP reacted angrily to remarks made by Soros on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Munich Security conference, alleging that Soros was targeting the Indian democratic system so that people “hand-picked” by him get to run the government here.
“The people of India will determine who will be in and who will be out of the government of India. I did not know that the Modi government was so feeble that it can be toppled by the stray statement of a 92-year-old rich foreign national,” Chidambaram said in a series of tweets.
He also alleged that the Modi government’s policies have created oligopolies instead of ushering in competition.
Earlier the century old party Congress who now in oppostion alleged The Union government is “running away” from a JPC probe into the Adani-Hindenburg issue, on Tuesday and said the government should allow the investigation if has nothing to hide.
The Congress’ attack on the government came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s reported remarks that there is nothing for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hide or be afraid of in the matter.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said he has written to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chief Madhabi Puri Buch for an impartial probe into allegations against the Adani Group.
Reacting to Shah’s reported remarks, Ramesh said, “If they do not have anything to hide, why are they running away from a Joint Parliamentary Committee (probe).” “They do not even allow us to raise the demand of JPC in Parliament. When our leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge ji, raised the demand for JPC, their remarks were expunged,” Ramesh said. If there is nothing to hide, the government should allow a JPC, he stressed.

The 92-year-old hedge fund tycoon, who has been associated with supporting liberal causes, on Thursday sent shockwaves in the Indian political scene saying Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fates are entwined, and alleged that Modi was not a “democrat.” Speaking at the Munich Security conference, he also said the turmoil in Adani’s business empire may open the door to a “democratic revival” in the country.

Responding to a question at a session at the Raisina@Sydney Dialogue, Jaishankar said Soros is an “old, rich, opinionated person sitting in New York, who still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works.”
“Now, if I could only stop at old, rich and opinionated, I would put it away but he is old, rich, opinionated and dangerous,” Jaishankar said.
