Congress-backed student National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a comeback on the DU campus by bagging two posts — president and vice-president — in Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls.

The RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which had won three seats last year, including that of the president, could only win posts of secretary and joint secretary.

Earlier united Left alliance in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student elections, scored emphatic victory is significant claim left wing leaders for the reason JNU has been in the eye of successive storms since the appointment of its new vice-chancellor (V-C) in January 2016. From the arrest of the student’s union president and other activists on “sedition” charges last year to an 83% seat cut in MPhil/PhD admissions this year, which dislocated the academic life of hundreds of JNU students, to the recent bid to install a battle tank inside the campus , there has been a barrage of adventurist moves and proposals by the V-C to fundamentally alter the character of the university.

Among the winners were NSUI’s Rocky Tuseed who wrested the president’s post and Kunal Sehrawat who got the post of the vice-president. Congress leaders hailed the victory of the students’ union calling it a triumph of liberal values and wake up call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rocky Tuseed won the president’s post by a margin of 1,590 votes, while Kunal Sehrawat defeated the ABVP candidate by 175 votes. ABVP’s Mahamedha Nagar defeated NSUI’s Minakshi Meena by 2,624 votes to win the post of secretary while Uma Shankar defeated NSUI’s Avinash Yadav 342 votes.

Party leader Deepender Hooda also claimed that NSUI had won three seats but one seat went to ABVP after recounting and they are going to approach judiciary against ABVP candidate Uma Shankar win.

DUSU has been a straight close contest between ABVP and NSUI, the Left-wing’s All India Students Association (AISA) is now a vocal participant.
