A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Rajesh Yadav was shot dead outside a hostel near the University of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh’s late on Monday, police said.

Enraged BSP workers staged a violent protest and torched a roadways bus demanding the early arrest of the culprits. Heavy police force was rushed near the Indian Press Crossing to control the situation.

Preliminary investigations revealed Rajesh Yadav had gone to meet someone at Tara Chand Hostel with his friend Dr Mukul Singh where he had an altercation with some people.

Dr Singh told the police that some people attacked the BSP leader and opened fire at him at around 2.30am. Yadav sustained a bullet injury on his stomach and was rushed to a private hospital by Dr Singh where he died while undergoing treatment.

TV reports said on Tuesday two buses were set on fire and a hospital was attacked allegedly by BSP workers.

Police are investigating the incident and an FIR will be lodged after receiving a complaint, officials said.

Yadav lived with his family at Haritkunj Apartment near Chandrashekhar Azad Park. who is native of Duguna village of Bhadohi, he contested the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2017 on a BSP ticket.

Recently Police opened rubber bullet firing against women students of Banras university and later state police officers blamed university for the police action and given clean chit to students.
