Yesterday night DMK cadres started gathering outside the DMK leader M Karunanidhi’s residence in Chennai and police found hard time to surge the crowd that gathered and then had to put up barricades to manage the rush.

Doctors are monitoring the ailing DMK president M Karunanidhi, who is being treated for urinary tract infection, even as his son’s Stalin and Azhagiri visited him overnight and crowds gathered outside his Gopalapuram residence.

Karunanidhi’s daughter M Kanimozhi is also flying from Delhi and is expected to reach Chennai by 11am.

The medical team from Kauvery Hospital, treating the 94-year-old former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, are expected to issue a health bulletin on Friday. Four more doctors arrived on Friday morning.

In a statement released on Thursday, Kauvery Hospital’s executive director Aravindan Selvaraj said there has been a slight decline in Karunanidhi’s health due to age-related ailments.

“He is currently being treated for fever due to urinary tract infection with intravenous antibiotics and fluids. He is being monitored and treated round the clock by a team of medical and nursing professionals, who are providing hospital-level care at his home,” Selvaraj said.

Last night, an AIADMK delegation led by deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam called on ailing leader.

After their visit, Panneerselvam and his cabinet colleague D Jayakumar said Karunanidhi was “doing well”.

“Karunanidhi will return in good health soon,” Admk minister Jayakumar told reporters.

Jayakumar said it was political decency for the ruling party to visit Karunanidhi’s residence, adding that a DMK delegation visited the Apollo hospitals here when former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was undergoing treatment in 2016.

The AIADMK delegation, which included ministers SP Velumani and P Thangamani, held discussions with Karunanidhi’s son and working president MK Stalin.

Actor turned Politician Kamalahasan also called on Gopalapuram to inquire about the veteran leader health.

Senior DMK leaders, including Duraimurugan and TR Baalu, were present during the meeting.

Recently, Karunanidhi had been admitted to Kauvery Hospital for change of the tracheostomy tube.
