Police in Tiruvannamalai have arrested three men who allegedly raped and molested a young Russian woman who was visiting the temple town, located in northern Tamil Nadu.

All Three persons are localities who were associated with Hindu temple guiding activities for tourists were arrested on charges of raping a 21-year-old Russian woman in Tiruvannamalai on Tuesday.

Tiruvannamalai Town sub-inspector J Illavarasi registered a case under IPC Section 376 (rape) and Section 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment).

Earlier Russian women arrived in Tiruvannamalai, home to a well-known Shiva temple, to study about hindu culture and visit tiruvannamalai temple last Thursday.

But She didn't leave her room in the guest house after Sunday. The police, who were tipped off by neighbours, found her inside the next day. She was unconscious.

She had suffered grievous injuries during the assault and Tiruvannamalai town station police admitted her to government medical college hospital after being alerted by the locals.

She was taken to a government hospital, where she regained consciousness. Samples of her blood were sent to Chennai for investigation, and a Russian translator was hired to record her statement.

“We have roped in a Russian to translate the victim’s statement as the victim speaks only Russian. She has regained consciousness and is fine now,” said V Vanitha, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

The victim had arrived in Tiruvannamalai on July 12 as part of a holiday trip. She was staying at a guest house on the Girivalam path, police said.

“A medical report said she had bite marks on her face and hands and scratch marks on her upper body,” a district administration official said quoting a police statement. “It also confirmed sexual abuse.” Investigators have seized drugs from the apartment.

One of the suspects confessed to police he had accompanied the woman to the temple and ashram.

Tiruvannamalai district judge G Mahizhenthi said that victim compensation would be given to the woman in a day or two as per the law. The District Legal Services Authority told the police to collect details of all foreigners staying in the district to prevent such crimes.
