Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced a slew of measures to improve the agricultural sector in the country. The government has promised to double the farmers’ income in 5 years and the budget had also mentioned market reforms that will be undertaken to give an opportunity to farmers to sell their produce and get better prices.
But where this monies are going asking the protesting people . The protests – both in states ruled by the BJP – come as a reality check for the government.
The protests began in Maharashtra on June 1, when farmers announced a ten-day-long agitation demanding a complete farm loan waiver, higher minimum support prices and other benefits.
To attract the state’s attention and to register their protests, the farmers have resorted to means like spilling milk, crushing their produce and throwing it out on the roads. The farmers also called for a bandh in most districts of Maharashtra – the ruling party bjp ally shiva sena did not participate in cabinet meeting but joined protest that now has spread to the neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh.
Uncertainty looms over the state of Madhya Pradesh a day after five people were killed when police allegedly opened fire on the crowd of protesters in Mandsaur.
Curfew was imposed and continues to be in place in the Pipalya Mandi police station area of the district – where the incident took place – as well as across Mandsaur. Internet services have been suspended and section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in the rest of the district.
The Centre has rushed 1,100 anti-riots police personnel to Mandsaur to help restore peace. The Prime Minister held a meeting on Wednesday with his senior ministers where he was apprised of the situation on the ground.
However, violent protests were reported on Wednesday from places scattered across the state, with protesters torching buses and vandalising trucks carrying supplies to and fro within the state. Reports of violence have been reported from Ujjain, Dewas, Mandsaur, Neemuch and Sehore.
The Congress on Monday alleged that on an average, nearly 35 farmers committed suicide every day in the country ever since Narendra Modi became the prime minister.
In Madhya Pradesh, 1,982 farmers committed suicides in the year 2016, according to State Assembly records. In Maharashtra, the number of farmers’ suicide is climbing. 639 farmers committed suicide between January 1 and March 31, 2017, reported News agency.
Statistics add that the GDP from agriculture in the country decreased to Rs 4493.13 billion in the first quarter of 2017 from Rs 5468.54 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016. These numbers appear despite a good monsoon in 2016 and the government’s steps to tackle the agrarian crisis.
